Hi! My name is Jadiyah (JAH-DEE-YAH).  Welcome to Black Onion Food & Travel.  How did you come up with the name Black Onion?  Well, the term describes me perfectly.  I am a black woman, and one of my favorite foods is an onion.  99% of my meals include onion. Funnily, I always manage to make friends with people who don’t like onions.  I am from a little island called Bermuda in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.  (Please, no Bermuda Triangle questions).  Back in the day Bermudians were known as onions.  This is because onions used to be one of our main exports. 

I am a passionate foodie, who enjoys cooking and baking for family and friends.  Going out to eat is one of my favorite things to do.  Since I was a child, I have loved to write.  I thought, “why not combine two of my favorite things, writing and food”.  Hence the birth of this blog.

I created this blog to share my thoughts on my food experiences, share my recipes coupled with personal stories, and connect like-minded passionate foodies.  My mother thought I would’ve attended culinary school after high school.  At the time, I didn’t believe I would feel the same passion as a professional chef, as I do cooking in my home kitchen.  I wish my mother had explored this option with me more.  I know now there are way more career opportunities in the food industry than just being a chef.  There are currently careers that didn’t exist at the time of me finishing high school.  Even as a busy working full-time, single mom, I am blessed to be able to have a desire and passion to chase my dreams and combine two of the things that I love, food and writing. 

Some of my favorite food shows include Top Chef, MasterChef The Professionals, Next Level Chef, and Hot Ones (YouTube).

One of the best parts about traveling is learning about the food and culture of the countries.  The best coffee I have ever had was in Costa Rica.  The best tea I ever had was in India.  One of my favorite countries I have visited is Mexico (Los Cabos), and I hope to return someday.  The most interesting city I have traveled to was Amsterdam.  How crazy that I reconnected with a cousin that I hadn’t seen in years on the trip to Amsterdam!  I am blessed to have had the many travel experiences I have had so far.  At the top of my travel list right now is Jamaica, Japan, Antigua (return), Spain, Hawaii, Dubai, Mexico (return).  As you can tell, I have huge travel aspirations.  I hope that you will journey with me via this blog as I check these countries off the list.
